The history of lūʻaus is quite rich! This traditional feast is deeply rooted in the cultural traditions of the indigenous people of Hawaii, dating back centuries. According to The Hawaii Islands, these Hawaiian feasts/celebrations are traditionally known as ʻahaʻaina or pāʻina, but over the course of time, “the nickname lūʻau – a reference to the taro leaves at the core of many popular dishes – has stuck”.

These feasts were not only about food, but have also served as opportunities for storytelling, dance, music, and community bonding. We highly recommend watching the following videos from the National Museum of the American Indian and National Geographic to better understand the deep cultural significance of a lūʻau.
